You walk past a row of weathered headstones, hearing only the wind in the trees. You think you're alone with the dead. Look closer at the dirt between your shoes. Thousands of tiny holes dot the soil. A low, constant hum fills the air. You aren't standing in an empty patch of grass. You're standing on top of five and a half million wild bees.
Researchers from Cornell University recently uncovered something staggering in a 1.5-acre section of a cemetery in Ithaca, New York. They estimated an underground population of roughly 5.5 million wild, ground-nesting bees. To put that in perspective, that number dwarfs the human population of Manhattan three times over, all packed into a plot smaller than many standard city blocks.
How Do You Count Five Million Invisible Insects?
Nobody dug up the graveyard. That would have destroyed the very ecosystem they wanted to measure.
Instead, a Cornell entomology lab technician named Rachel Fordyce brought the project to life after noticing bees pouring out of the turf. She scooped a handful into a jar, brought them into the lab, and identified them as Andrena regularis, commonly known as the regular mining bee.
To get an accurate headcount without harming the colony, the research team used emergence traps. These are small mesh tents pegged securely over the soil with a funnel leading directly into a glass jar. During the spring season, these traps captured thousands of individual insects across multiple species, though the mining bee dominated the count. By calculating nest density per square meter and scaling that across the 6,000 square meters of grass and gravestones, lead author Steve Hoge and his colleagues landed on the 5.5 million estimate.
Specimens collected at the site date back to 1935. This massive underground city has been quietly thriving for the better part of a century without anyone noticing.
Solitary Bees That Hate Being Social

First, the soil conditions are ideal. The ground is well-drained and compact enough to hold underground tunnels, yet regular mowing keeps the grass short. This creates the bare or sparsely vegetated ground patches that ground-nesting bees desperately need to access their burrows.
Second, the surrounding plant life provides a steady buffet of flowers for pollen and nectar.
Most importantly, management practices at places like this lean toward minimal chemical use. Standard urban and suburban lawns get blasted with insecticides and herbicides that wipe out beneficial insects. By avoiding harsh chemical inputs, the cemetery allowed these populations to multiply unchecked by artificial poisons.
The Unsung Heroes of New York Agriculture
Wild bees aren't just a fun scientific curiosity. They are agricultural powerhouses.
Earlier research at Cornell demonstrated that native wild bees are often two to three times better at pollinating crops like apples than standard honeybees. Honeybees tend to drink the nectar at the base of a flower and frequently miss the reproductive parts entirely. Wild bees go after the pollen, blundering straight through the center and getting covered in dust.
New York ranks as one of the top apple-producing states in the country. Millions of unmanaged, uncounted native pollinators have been doing heavy lifting for local farmers for generations.
What This Means for Urban Green Spaces
The hidden metropolis beneath the New York headstones changes how we should look at urban conservation.
We spend millions on engineered pollinator gardens and rooftop flower boxes, while ignoring millions of square feet of existing green space. Parks, school grounds, golf courses, and cemeteries are scattered throughout every major city. If managed correctly, they can function as a vast network of underground refuges.
Protecting these populations doesn't require complex technology. It requires doing less. Cutting back on pesticide use, leaving patches of soil unpaved, and reducing aggressive tilling can turn ordinary municipal land into a thriving ecosystem.
Nature doesn't always need to be built from scratch. Sometimes it just needs us to look down and stop paving over what's already there.
