Tanks roll down mountain roads, internet connections drop into total blackouts, and citizens bleed on the streets of Muzaffarabad. Islamabad is handling the crisis in Pakistan-administered Kashmir with a heavy iron fist, and it's blowing up right in their face. If you think this is just another localized political dispute, you're missing the entire picture. The ongoing turmoil in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has transformed into a full-scale governance disaster.
The core of this mess isn't complicated, but Islamabad's response makes it infinitely worse. Protests erupted after authorities banned the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) under anti-terrorism laws. The JAAC represents a massive coalition pushing for a 38-point charter of demands. At the absolute center of this fury are twelve legislative assembly seats reserved for refugees who migrated decades ago. Locals argue these seats let outside political parties meddle in local affairs and divert development funds.
When the local Supreme Court ruled that these reserved seats are constitutionally protected, the streets exploded. Instead of opening a dialogue, Islamabad and regional authorities chose brute force.
