Military aviation programs usually take decades to move from blueprints to actual factory lines. Ankara just bucked that trend. The first production-standard HÜRJET jet trainer recently wrapped up its maiden flight on Victory Day, shifting the entire program away from prototype testing and straight into real manufacturing.
If you have been watching the aerospace industry, you know that moving from a couple of test articles to serial production is where most ambitious defense projects stall. Turkish Aerospace Industries managed to pull it off. They did it fast, and they are already scaling up the factory floor.
Moving Past The Prototype Phase
Let us be honest about how flight testing usually goes. Programs spend years tweaking wiring, chasing software bugs, and nursing fragile prototypes through narrow flight envelopes. The HÜRJET program started back in 2017. By early 2023, the first prototype took to the skies, followed by a second one in late 2024.
Those two test birds did serious work. They racked up around 340 test flights and close to 260 flight hours. They pulled off supersonic runs, flirted with transonic limits, flew formation with stealth drones like the Anka-3, and even showed off with the Turkish Stars aerobatic team. That is not normal testing speed. That is aggressive iteration.
This new serial aircraft is different from those prototypes. It represents the actual configuration that will roll out to operational squadrons. It features the finalized structural changes, upgraded avionics bays, and the maturity needed to handle student pilots without breaking down every five minutes.
Why The Hurjet Matters Right Now
Air forces around the world have a massive problem. Their legacy trainer fleets are falling apart. Aging aircraft like the T-38 Talon and various older F-5 models are chewing through maintenance budgets just to stay airworthy. Pilots need modern cockpits that mimic fifth-generation fighters, but running those hours on expensive frontline combat jets is a terrible waste of money.
The HÜRJET fills that exact gap. It is a single-engine, tandem-seat supersonic jet trainer powered by a General Electric F404 engine. That is the same reliable power plant family found on the F/A-18 Hornet. It hits Mach 1.4 and climbs to 45,000 feet.
You get high-end performance without paying twin-engine operating costs. That math appeals to budget-conscious defense ministries that still need real supersonic training capability.
Landing International Buyers Early
Most domestic defense projects only supply their home military for years before anyone abroad looks twice. Turkish Aerospace skipped that waiting period. Spain stepped up and agreed to buy 30 aircraft to replace its own aging F-5 fleet.
This deal represents a massive milestone. It is the first time Turkey has exported a jet trainer to a NATO member state. Reports indicate the total supply contract could expand to roughly 45 aircraft with an estimated value near $3.6 billion. Deliveries for the Spanish air arm are slated for 2028, coming hot on the heels of the Turkish Air Force receiving its own initial jets.
When a Western European nation buys a military trainer from a non-traditional exporter, the industry takes notice. It proves the aircraft is not just a political project. It is a competitive product that beats legacy Western options on price, capability, and delivery timelines.
What Comes Next For The Production Line
Building one good jet is easy. Building two a month is where the real engineering challenge begins. Turkish Aerospace plans to hit a production rate of two aircraft every single month once the line runs at full capacity.
The first batch heading out the door will go straight to the Turkish Stars aerobatic team by the end of this year. After that, wider fleet deliveries begin for the air force.
At the same time, engineers are not stopping at a basic trainer. Light attack variants and naval configurations are already in development. There has been persistent talk about landing the HÜRJET on the deck of the TCG Anadolu, Turkey's drone carrier and amphibious assault ship. If they pull off carrier operations with a supersonic trainer-turned-light-attack aircraft, the export market will open up even further.
